This database can be searched for 38,000 names taken from WWI memorials in the Merseyside area (memorials included in the database).
Because many men were commemorated on a number of memorials the database does not contain the names of 38,000 individuals. The information will be displayed as shown below for the three FODDY BROTHERS of Bootle. Each man's name appears on several memorials - fifteen memorials in all; at the places where they lived, worshipped and were educated. Memorials were often also erected at places of employment and at social and sporting clubs.
A page dedicated to Clement John FODDY can be found at Great War Roll Of Honour King's (Liverpool) Regt. Clicking on the Biography link next to his name will redirect you to this external website. Paged dedicated to Harry Foddy and Walter Foddy are within the Merseyside Roll of Honour website.
This example also shows that different war memorials give varying amounts of information. This database shows the information that appears on the memorials, using original spellings and abbreviations as far as possible.
As many memorials contain only an initial and not the full first name it is advisable to make your search as wide as possible. ie use FODDY rather than C FODDY but both of these are better than Clement John FODDY.
If you search for the name CLARK your search results will include all names that begin with CLARK such as CLARKE and CLARKSON.
Further Search Options are available if you wish to limit a search to a specific location or type of memorial, such as all the Wrights in Formby, all the names that appear on Garston memorials, or all memorials erected at workplaces.
You can also extract the names of those who served with the Australian forces, all Airmen, members of the King's Liverpool Regiment, or those lost on the Lusitania. However, many memorials do not contain these additional details. The example of the three FODDY BROTHERS shown below illustrates this point. WALTER FODDY's name appears on seven memorials but only four of these give the name of his regiment.
